Preventing large-diameter pipe failures is a primary concern for asset managers, who face costs between US$500,000 and US$1.5 million. Fortunately for owners of prestressed concrete cylinder pipe (PCCP), Pure’s SoundPrint® Acoustic Fiber Optic (AFO) Monitoring technology is an industry-leading system that tracks and records pipeline deterioration. Pure’s monitoring systems are installed on more than 600 miles (1,000 kilometers) of PCCP around the world and have prevented a number of high profile failures.

Once installed in a pipeline, the SoundPrint AFO system remotely detects the acoustic signature of wire breaks in PCCP, and records their specific pipe location. If break activity increases, utility staff are alerted and can intervene on the deteriorating pipe in advance of a failure.

PCCP monitoring is often partnered with baseline electromagnetic (EM) inspection to create intelligent infrastructure. The baseline EM inspection identifies the amount of existing wire wrap breaks in each section of PCCP at a point in time, while the SoundPrint AFO system continuously monitors the same pipe sections for ongoing deterioration. Combined with a detailed engineering evaluation and structural analysis, a determination can be made about the wire break limit of each pipe section. As the monitoring system records breaks and the pipe section approaches its limit, pipe sections can be proactively rehabilitated in advance of an expensive failure.
